Power and Myths about Porcelain Veneers

In recent decades, porcelain veneers have become reshaped cosmetic dentistry. They are certainly one of Dr. Stella Oh’s favorite and specialized procedures in her practice.

Myths About Porcelain Veneers

Although porcelain veneers have become a popular procedure, many of us have do not have a clear idea about them.

In this article, you will learn the truth about the porcelain veneers – what they can do, when they are indicated and the myths people commonly have.

The Power of Porcelain Veneers

Benefits of Veneers

Porcelain Veneers can provide you with the most beautiful smile makeover

They can repair the chips, discoloration and uneven contour.  We can also select the most pleasing, brighter and natural shade that fits you.

The porcelain veneers can straighten your teeth (to a degree)

They can straighten the misaligned teeth.  If the teeth are slightly misaligned, have gaps and unusual spaces. Veneers can fix them beautifully and you can totally rejuvenate your smile.

However, if the degree of the misalignment is too great then it is difficult to straighten out the teeth with veneers alone. You may need Invisalign or a similar procedure plus the veneers.

The porcelain veneers can whiten your teeth

They can definitely whiten your teeth more than simple bleaching. Additionally, intrinsically stained teeth due to medications or environmental factors (too much fluoride or minerals in the water illness as the teeth are forming) can benefit from having veneers.  Such intrinsic stains cannot be easily whitened by tooth whitening procedures.

The veneers can restore the chipped, broken tooth structure.

Although resin bonding can restore the chipped or broken tooth, they stain and wear faster than the natural structure overtime.  If the chip or fracture involvement is significant, you may need a veneer or porcelain crown for strength and longevity.

10 Myths about Porcelain Veneers

Everything You Need To Know About Veneers

Veneers can be done without cutting the tooth structure.

In most cases, veneers require preparing of contouring of a tooth structure. Only rare cases, we can get by without cutting teeth (e.g. if the teeth are already too small). Otherwise, teeth would become too bulky and the porcelain too thin, and potentially too weak.

All dentists deliver the same results.

Prosthodontists have an additional 3 years of intense training more than general dentists in every type of case.  This includes the most straightforward veneer cases to the most complex ones. Sometimes there is one dark tooth (e.g. one with existing root canal) or one that is an implant. Perhaps it is a patient who grinds his/her teeth (In New York, this is more the norm than the exception).  Creating a bright, natural smile with these factors can be a challenge without the proper training. Whenever possible, seek a prosthodontist to restore your teeth with veneers.

You have to veneer all the teeth to look fabulous.

You do not have to restore all the teeth.  As a matter of fact, there are instances only 1 veneer can improve someone’s smile.

However, it does become easier to match about 6-8 teeth on the upper arch at the same time for the lab technician to fabricate them.  Yet the ease of shade matching should not be the reason to aggressively treat a case, according to Dr. Oh.

Veneers Can Give You Your Best Smile Transformation

The shade of veneers must be white, white, white.

As a matter of fact, really white, unlively teeth should not be considered cosmetic procedure  We want to rejuvenate and make the teeth brighter not fake-looking white teeth.

Veneers can be done in 1 visit or take many visits.

They could be done in 1 visit in some cases, but there will be a hefty rush fee. Normally the porcelain veneer treatment should take 3 visits.  Why 3? Because you need a great workup consultation visit, preparation/impression visit, and delivery/insertion visit. The workup is so important as Dr.Oh and Dr. Estafan would like to create the best blueprint for the actual veneers.

Temporary Veneer is not crucial or necessary

The temporary, according to Dr. Oh is an absolute necessity.  First of all the teeth are exposed and may be sensitive and most importantly, the temporary will serve as a blueprint for the technician to fabricate “your best-looking teeth.”  Dr.Oh spends much time shaping and contouring the temporary veneers for each patient to look and feel fabulous with the temporary.

Veneers last forever.

The veneers may need to be replaced.  Just like any dental fillings or crowns, they could have wear and tear and they may need to be replaced. Also, we all have some degree of receding gums as part of aging and the margins may show and this may require a new veneer due to the esthetics.

Veneers Can Bring Out Your Beauty

Veneers are only for cosmetic reasons

Veneers can be done for functional reasons. They are more durable restoration to repair a chip or restoring a congenitally small tooth.

Veneers do not cause any pain or a lot of pain.

Veneer procedures may cause some post-op sensitivity but they are not permanent.  Most patients do not have pain. However, local anesthesia is required during the procedure.

Veneers are not as strong as a crown.

Well done veneers are just as or even stronger than the crown.  Not all cases are the same, but most veneers are strong and can last for 10-15+ years.
