What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are durable, medical-grade shells that are specifically designed to fit over the front teeth to conceal damaged, misaligned, or discolored teeth. Each veneer is customized in size, shape, and color to match the wearer’s unique oral structure for a natural-looking, fuller smile. At Madison Avenue Dentists, Dr. Oh carefully evaluates each patient’s oral health to determine if porcelain veneers are the right cosmetic treatment approach to help meet their dental goals.
Benefits of porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers offer men and women numerous aesthetic and functional benefits, including:
- A simple and minimally invasive treatment method for a fuller smile
- Highly tailored, long-lasting material
- Easy technique to conceal damage, misalignments, and stains
- Stain-resistant cosmetic material
- Little to no downtime
Can I get veneers with gapped teeth?
Porcelain veneers are an excellent cosmetic dental option to address gaps in the front teeth. Additionally, porcelain veneers can potentially help resolve any of the following issues:
- Stained or discolored teeth
- Chipped or fractured teeth
- Misshapen or uneven teeth
- A gummy smile
Who should not get porcelain veneers?
Dr. Oh will carefully assess each patient’s teeth and dental history to determine if they should receive porcelain veneers or if alternative treatment methods are more appropriate. Porcelain veneers are not designed to conceal large gaps or full missing teeth. Patients should have a sufficient amount of enamel and surface area on the front teeth to host new porcelain veneers. If a patient has active oral infections, tooth decay, or periodontal disease, then patients may need to resolve these issues first or may not qualify, depending on the severity.
What the treatment process is like
Patients attend their scheduled appointments at Madison Avenue Dentists located in New York City, where Dr. Oh will strip a small amount of enamel from the front teeth and collect dental impressions. The dental impressions will be sent to the laboratory, where customized porcelain veneers are created. While the patient waits for their veneers, they are sent home with temporary veneers to protect the exposed teeth. Once the new porcelain veneers are ready, the patient returns to our office, where Dr. Oh will bond and cure the porcelain veneers to the front teeth with a strong adhesive.
Is there any recovery time after getting porcelain veneers?
Many patients return home after receiving their porcelain veneers and can eat and drink relatively normal foods. Dr. Oh may recommend avoiding chewy, hard, or sticky foods for a while to allow for the veneers to settle into their natural position. Patients typically experience sensitivity to cold and hot temperatures, which should resolve within a few days.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
With the appropriate care, the right lifestyle choices, and dedicated dental hygiene habits, porcelain veneers have the potential to last for up to 20 years. Patients may consider applying the following tips to extend the life and quality of their new porcelain veneers:
- Brush and floss twice daily
- Regularly use mouth rinse
- Eat nutritious meals
- Minimize staining foods and oral product use (tobacco, tea, acidic foods, wine, coffee)
- Reduce sugar intake
- Regularly attend dental checkups and professional cleanings
